I have now begun the preparations for my Poster, although I have not taken the pictures yet, I have looked through other movie posters within the same genre, romantic, and target audience, generally females between 12 and 65 that I am aiming for, and I have used them as inspiration for my own. I have created a template for my poster that will enable me to put in the shot desired easily and quickly. Through doing this I found that by making a template I know exactly what position the shot will need to be, and exactly what the requirements of the picture will have to meet. For example:
• White background
• Medium Close up
• Capturing expression on character
I have not as yet decided whether I will have one or two characters in the shot, although I think two will work better as it will tell the audience more about what the film will be about and therefore will hopefully appeal to a wider audience.
I will follow this idea and go for the two people medium close up, where the two are close and looking towards the camera from an embrace, perhaps the man leaning slightly over the woman. As this should hopefully attract my target audience to the poster and to the name of the film, hopefully then reaching my target audience and beyond if possible.
As an alternative I could have the man looking towards the woman and the woman looking towards the camera smiling. This is quite similar to the P.S I Love You poster, and I don’t want it to be too similar, however this does convey the right message towards the right target audience about the two who are in love and cannot be separated.
Now that I have options for my shot that will be placed into my move poster I am much more confident and focussed about what the end product will look like, and the desired outcome that the poster will have.
To create the basic template that I have made:
1. I decided to use Adobe Photoshop for my Movie poster, as this is very useful with the available tools that is has e.g. text tools and picture editing tools like background remover, and it will enable me to create a publication more easily and effectively using professional equipment used in the industry.
2. I then opened a blank document and set my dimensions to standard A3 measurements, 420mmX270mm
3. I then decided to keep the background blank and white, as this is typical of a romantic movie poster. I did not want to break this convention as I do not feel that a coloured or black background would have suited the theme and look of the poster that I was going for. I also feel that the outcome would not be the same, for example I want to convey a message that this film is suitable for a wide range of ages, by having say a red background, this message may not have been put across quite so well as having a white background, as the red would have seemed to have given the poster a sense of sexuality and promiscuity, this is something that I wanted to avoid. Also by having a white background I am presenting a strong image of the protagonists which will come across on the page well.
4. With an A3 White background poster, I will add the text. To do this I click on the button with the letter T. I then dragged a box open on the left hand side of the poster page, and chose the font “High Tower Text” in italics size 105pt, it was also set to smooth. I chose this font as it stands out but it is also quite soft and so fits the genre perfectly.
5. I then wrote in ‘LOVE NEVER LEAVES’ after each word I decided to go down a line. As this spread the text out and made the name of the movie clearer and more substantial on the page in order for it to be remembered more easily. It also gives the effect of a poem or a song, which again reaches out and will speak to the target audience I am aiming for.
6. For the colours of the text I decided to have the two outer words, ‘LOVE ‘ and ‘LEAVES’ as a separate colour from the word ‘NEVER’ I chose to do this after looking at some of the movie posters suited for my genre this was something that caught my eye. After asking a group of 20 participants from my target audience how the text should be coloured, either a)all black b)all one colour but not black nor white or c)one colour for ‘LOVE’ and ‘LEAVES’ and another for ‘NEVER’ over 67% of them decided that option C was better in this case. So I decided to do this as this is what my target audience want.
7. The colours I chose were, a dark grey and an orangey cream. The numbers that these colours were are:
a. DARK GREY – red=61 blue =60 green=60
b. ORANGEY CREAM – red=240 blue=195 green=123
8. I also went in by one space each time I went down a line for the next word to give it a staggered effect as this looked very professional and I think unlike any other movie poster I have seen. I am aiming for the protagonists in the image to lean out to recreate this angle against the text.
9. I chose these colours because they are soft, representing the genre again and putting across the theme of the movie. Yet they also stand out against the white background making the poster ‘POP’ out of the page. This is exactly what I was looking for and I think that this will ultimately make this publication unique and fabulous.
10. I have also decided to put names of the famous actors who I would like to star in my movie at the top of the page. For this I used the dark grey colour as I this is at the top of the page it will make the poster stand out and make the names clear to attract more customers or more views of the poster to create awareness of the film. This then is also in keeping with the rest of the colour scheme used in the film.
11. I have chosen these actors to star in this film, as not only will this then mean that many fans of these actors will decide to have a look at this film, but it will also create a message about my film as all of these characters have had some experience playing similar roles as the role that I would like them to play in my film. Thus creating an experienced cast that will be able to make my film the best it can be.
12. I have also decided to put 5 stars underneath the word ‘LEAVE’ with a quote next to it saying “Unmissable”-Daily Mail. This is to show the audience that film critics have actually seen the film and given it the highest of ratings, resulting in a film that more people Want to watch because they respect the views and opinions of their much trusted film critics. To do this I used the stamp tool, with a pattern of a star in the colour #929292 and placed them underneath the word a specific space apart from each other, I used the guidelines and rulers tool on photo shop to provide me with accurate readings of where I should place the stars.
13. I don’t want to make my movie poster too busy so at the moment this is all I am going to put into this publication, other than the picture that will go in, in due course. I will also add in a section at the bottom of the poster about the companies that have been involved in the production, distribution, and editing processes of the film as this is a convention of all movie posters.
