Genre

Genre Decision
Why did you choose your genre?
When deciding what genre to use for my teaser trailer I thought about what I liked and what I thought would be enjoyable to do. If I had chosen to create a sci-fi trailer I would not have enjoyed the filming, nor would I have had an idea of the conventions of that kind of genre. Also I found that the majority of students chose to do a Horror/Thriller movie, so I also wanted to do something a little bit different. I am a big fan of Romantic films, and so a genre that I enjoyed, new a little bit about, and was enthusiastic over seemed to be most suitable to me.
Do you think it present any problems?
Once I had chosen the ‘Romantic’ genre I found that when you look at a genre from a media perspective, it’s not all about love and kissing which defines a romantic movie. In actual fact what makes a romantic movie trailer is the music, the actors, the lighting, the speed of the trailer. I found that what seemed to be quite a simple and easy idea at first was much deeper and did require a lot of thinking in order to make a film with two people kissing into a romantic film trailer.
What other movie trailers from the genre did you watch?
When looking for romantic film trailers I found ‘Dear John’, ‘Notting Hill’, ‘Love Happens’, ‘Valentine’s Day’ ,’The Last Song’, ‘Remember Me’, ‘The back-up plan’, ‘Letters to Juliet’
From watching these trailers I have managed to create the plot of the story, I have based the story of the trailer on ‘Dear John’ although I have not copied this; it is quite similar to the story of this film as I felt it typified the conventions of a romantic movie. You can watch ‘Dear John’ further down in my blog.
